On March 27 he died at age 88 near Salvador (Bahia), the liberation theologian Jose Comblin. Belgian by birth, chose to work in Latin America, as he realized that European Christianity was twilight and saw in our sub-space for creativity and a new test of the Christian faith articulated in popular culture. He embodied the new way of doing theology, launched by the Liberation Theology, which is to have one foot in poverty and one in the academy. Or put another way: to articulate the cry of the oppressed with the liberating faith message of Jesus, always starting from the contradictory reality, not doctrines, and collectively find a way out from liberating the people.
